One dead, one critical in Scott County shooting

One dead, one critical in Scott County shooting

Scott County authorities are investigating a suicide and attempted murder near Fort Blackmore in Scott County.

According to Scott County Sheriff John Puckett, just before 10 p.m. Wednesday, Samantha Carter, 39, was shot twice by her husband, Kevin Carter, 40, when she asked him to leave their home on the Clinch River Highway after a fight. He apparently turned the gun on himself after she fled to a neighboring residence for help.

Puckett said Samantha Carter stated that her husband told her, "Before I leave, I'll kill both of us," then retrieved a 16-gauge shotgun, shooting her in the arms before she managed to escape the bedroom and the house. Deputies responded and found the body of Kevin Carter in the bedroom, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

As of 3 a.m., Puckett said Samantha Carter was in critical condition at Holston Valley Medical Center.

This happened just about a mile and half from my house. Samantha isn't that old, probably 32. Luckily her kids were at her ex-husbands. Its a really sad situation as I am kin to Kevin distantly, but didn't really know him too well. Samantha was messed up pretty badly, but should be able to survive. She will probably lose at least an arm though.

I used to be good friends with Kevin. Used to cruise the big Gate City with him before I was married. It sure is something how people change in just 10 years time. Never would have thought that of him then.

I dont think so. I dont know that he was always known as Kevin Carter either though. His father was a Kelly and I thought he may have went by Kevin Kelly growing up but I am not sure. Carter was his mothers maiden name.
